Photography's New Wave in Art Galleries

Lately, photography is stealing the spotlight in contemporary art galleries. The New York Times reports that many U. S. galleries are hosting photography exhibitions, like the Place Gallery in Manhattan showcasing Irving Penn's work from November 15 to December 21. It's not just about displays; big-name art dealers are shifting focus from painting to photography. Artist and photographer Trevor Paglen is presenting undoctored UFO photos at San Francisco's Altman Siegel Gallery, questioning what's real and what's not. Meanwhile, Canadian photographer Jeff Wall is exhibiting at New York's Gagosian, and Stan Douglas at David Zwirner. American artist Carrie Mae Weems is showing her photos of boarded-up windows in Portland at the Gladstone Gallery.

Sotheby's Emily Bierman notes that the contemporary art world is just starting to embrace photography. Art dealer Yancey Richardson agrees, saying people are finally grasping photography's importance. In 2023, Richard Avedon's centenary drew 35, 000 visitors to the Gagosian. Artificial intelligence is also changing the game. PetaPixel reports AI is influencing the photo industry, making physical prints seem more like fine art. Drew Sawyer from the Whitney Museum says AI makes even digital photography feel nostalgic. Paglen adds that AI is challenging our perception of reality, which could make photography more valued in art.
