Photos Capture Seldom-Seen Tribe in Amazon Jungle

Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, remote cameras have snapped incredible photos of an isolated tribe known as the Massaco, whose territory spreads across Brazil. This tribe, numbering around 200 to 300 people, continues to thrive despite encroaching threats from mining and logging firms. Government agent Altair Algayer, working with the Brazilian National Indigenous Peoples Foundation (Funai), placed trail cameras in the rainforest to monitor the tribe without disturbing them. Over the years, these cameras have shown that the tribe's population has significantly increased since the 1990s.

To maintain their isolation, the Massaco tribe uses unique tactics like placing wooden spikes camouflaged in the forest to ward off intruders. These defensive measures are a response to growing threats from agribusiness and drug traffickers. The tribe also employs long bows and arrows, some measuring over three meters, as part of their defense strategy. The images collected by Algayer are vital for Funai to document the tribe's existence and safeguard their territory. The Massaco tribe is one of many isolated communities scattered across the Amazon forest, which spans multiple South American countries.
