Late Tuesday evening, a twin-engine Beechcraft 95 plane crashed on Catalina Island, leaving five people dead. The plane took off from Catalina Airport with five adults on board and crashed just moments later, approximately a mile west of the airport. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call with GPS coordinates, which led rescue teams to the wreckage. The search and rescue operation was challenging due to the steep and rough terrain. The National Weather Service reported calm, clear, and quiet conditions with temperatures in the low 70s and light winds at the time of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident. Catalina Island has a history of aviation incidents, including a 2002 crash where five people died due to low visibility and a 2008 helicopter crash that killed three and injured others.
