Plans for Going-to-Sun Road’s summer opening
This year’s schedule for Going-to-Sun Road reflects a deliberate effort to balance visitor access with environmental protection. The full route opens to vehicles on Monday, weather permitting—no advance bookings required, a rarity among mountain roads.
For Cyclists: Rules Shift with the Seasons
Cyclists currently enjoy unrestricted access, but summer brings temporary restrictions:
- June 22 – September 27:
- Eastbound riders (Apgar to Logan Pass) must avoid the road 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
- Westbound riders are barred from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. The goal? Keep bike traffic out of peak congestion without shutting it down entirely.
Logan Pass: Facilities Open, High Trails Still Shut
Logan Pass unlocks key amenities on June 22, including restrooms and water refill stations. However, high-elevation trails like the Highline may remain snowbound until later in the season.
Parking at Logan Pass will be strictly limited to 3 hours from July through early September, pushing hikers toward shuttle services.
Shuttles Take Center Stage
From July 1 – September 7, shuttles will connect:
- Apgar
- Lake McDonald
- Logan Pass
- Rising Sun
- St. Mary
Planning to hike the Highline Trail? A shuttle ticket on recreation.gov is now mandatory—crowd control moves from on-site permits to reservation systems.
The message is clear: Access is open, but structure is key.
