Plants' Power Against Cancer: Why Tamarix nilotica Stands Out

Scientists were curious to see if two native UAE plants, Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Tamarix nilotica, could fight cancer. They tried two ways to get chemicals out of the plants: leaving them in a liquid (maceration) and heating them up with microwaves (microwave-assisted extraction or MAE). They tested how deadly these plant chemicals were to three types of cancer cells: breast (MDA-MB-231), colon (HCT-116), and lung (A-549). The results? MAE worked better, pulling out more useful plant stuff and making the chemicals more deadly to cancer cells. Only T. nilotica chemicals were strong enough to kill cancer cells. Breast cancer cells were the easiest to kill, while lung cancer cells were the toughest.

They also found that splitting up the T. nilotica chemicals depending on how much alcohol was mixed in made them even deadlier to cancer cells. The 30% and 70% mixes were the best at killing breast and colon cancer cells, respectively. They even looked at what these chemicals were made of and found lots of different ones. So, T. nilotica's plant chemicals might be helpful in fighting cancer, and MAE is a good way to get them out. Some cancer cells are more sensitive to these chemicals than others, and mixing them with different amounts of alcohol can make them even more deadly.
