Plug-In Hybrids: Not as Green as They Seem?
Are PHEVs Really Eco-Friendly?
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are often seen as a middle ground between traditional gas cars and fully electric vehicles. But are they really as eco-friendly as they claim to be? Recent findings suggest otherwise.
The Reality of PHEV Emissions
A study by Transport and Environment (T&E) found that PHEVs emit about 135 grams of CO2 per kilometer on average. This is much higher than the 60 grams of CO2 per kilometer that was previously thought. In fact, PHEVs only reduce emissions by 19% compared to traditional gas cars, not the 75% that manufacturers often advertise.
The Weight of the Battery
Unlike traditional hybrids, PHEVs have a larger battery that can be charged externally. This allows them to drive longer distances on electricity alone. However, this larger battery also makes the car heavier, which leads to higher fuel consumption and increased emissions. Even when operating in electric mode, PHEVs still use about 3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. This results in 68 grams of CO2 per kilometer, which is about 8.5 times the official prediction.
Lifetime Emissions: EVs vs. ICE Vehicles
A report by the Manhattan Institute found that electric vehicles (EVs) in general have a much wider range of potential greenhouse gas emissions than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This is mainly due to the variations in upstream emissions from mining and manufacturing processes. In some cases, the dirtiest EVs can have higher lifetime emissions than the cleanest gas cars.
The Good News
Studies have found that the greenhouse-gas emission difference caused by the carbon-intensive production of EVs is virtually erased in the first few years of an EV's life. For example, it takes about 1.4 to 1.5 years for EV sedans to erase the pollution advantage of ICE vehicles. This is based on the average number of vehicle miles driven in the United States.
Conclusion
While PHEVs may seem like a good compromise, they are not as eco-friendly as they are made out to be. It's important to do your research and consider all factors before making a purchase.
