Poland and Hungary: A Growing Rift in Europe
Poland's Justice Minister, Waldemar Zurek, recently made strong statements about Hungary's Prime Minister, Viktor Orban. He said Orban is closer to Russia than to Europe. This is not the first time Poland and Hungary have disagreed.
The Latest Argument
The latest argument started because Hungary is protecting two former Polish officials who are accused of misusing funds.
Zurek's Accusations
Zurek is upset that Hungary is not following EU rules. He mentioned that Hungary is blocking funds for Poland because Poland supports Ukraine against Russia's invasion.
"It seems Hungary's leaders are more aligned with Moscow than with the EU. This is concerning and sad."
He also accused Orban of trying to weaken the EU from within.
Orban's Response
Orban, however, sees things differently. He believes Poland's comments about Hungary's ties with Russia are unfair. He argues that Hungary's relationship with Russia is in Hungary's best interest. Orban also thinks that EU sanctions on Russia are not helpful.
The Two Former Polish Officials
The two former Polish officials, Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski, are in Hungary. They say they won't return to Poland because they believe they won't get a fair trial. A Polish court will soon decide if they should issue a European Arrest Warrant for Ziobro.
Zurek's Warning
Zurek said that Hungary is breaking EU rules by granting asylum to Romanowski. He suggested that Poland might have to expose Hungary's actions to the rest of the EU. This shows how serious the situation has become.
