Police Boost in Australia to Tackle Anti-Semitic Crimes

Lately, Australia has seen a surge in anti-Semitic crimes, with a recent incident involving a childcare center near a Sydney synagogue. The center was set on fire and decorated with anti-Semitic graffiti. No one was injured, but the building was badly damaged. This isn’t the first attack. Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, Sydney and Melbourne have witnessed several targeted attacks. Buildings and cars have been vandalized, and even a synagogue was burnt down in December, injuring someone.

The New South Wales police have formed Strike Force Pearl to investigate these hate crimes. They plan to increase resources after this latest incident. The police commissioner, Peter Thurtell, emphasized the importance of identifying and arresting these criminals to keep society safe. The state premier, Chris Minns, also expressed concern and assured that suspects are being brought to justice. So far, nine people have been arrested for recent attacks in Sydney. One suspect, Tammie Farrugia, was arrested and charged for her involvement in an attack in Woollahra, a Jewish neighborhood. She appeared in court but didn’t enter a plea. The police have been actively working to ensure community safety, with Operation Shelter resulting in over 180 arrests since the Israel-Hamas war.
