Political Rules Could Stop American Science From Growing

America’s science has already created technology like GPS, smartphones and batteries that drive the economy.

China is spending more on research in many areas, and the European Union offers scientists a stable environment to work. A political review of grants could give rivals an advantage and hurt the U. S. in science, business and security. People who depend on scientific progress—students, doctors, patients, and businesses—should speak up. Congress from both sides must look closely at the rule’s effects, and the administration should talk with scientists to keep the system strong. We can change how we spend money and speed up reviews, but we should not break the core that lets science thrive.
