Political Sparring Leads to Vought\'s Reconfirmation

The OMB, or Office of Management and Budget, gained a familiar face this December. Russ Vought, known for his distinct views on government spending, returned to head the agency. He was confirmed by the Senate with their vote on Thursday. Is this a win for government, the White House, or neither? Republicans celebrated Vought\'s confirmation. Many believed he was the perfect fit to slash government expenses and work with them on similar budget cuts. Everyone else had doubts. Democrats, in particular, saw it as a risky choice. They feared the implications on federal employees. The confirmation process wasn't easy. Democrats spoke out against the nomination all night Wednesday, and continued thru Thursday. . Kaine, a Democratic senator, criticized him. "Vought called for traumatizing federal workers" said Kaine. "No leader should be put in position who takes joy of hurting his workforce". With the filibuster gone amidst this process, Republicans had an easier road to pass Vought's nomination.

Vought was quick to stir controversy. He didn't agree to follow Congress' spending guidelines to the letter when he's asked. He repeated that the current law is restrictive and that he'd follow the President's orders. This led to alarms being raised by democrats. Trump's administration had previously resisted the limits of spending set by Congress. He favored policies that would strip federal employees of their protection. With these plans, Trump wanted to prioritize those loyal to his policies. But what was Vought doing before? He was the leader of OMB. During this time, he was notorious for budget proposals. He went against non-defense agencies in a big way. He also played a big part in deregulation. This included stopping most agencies from issuing guidelines without following a process. In 2020 Vought was confirmed for the position he is in now. Vought left office after Trump. He started the Center for Renewing America. There, he criticized the size of the federal workforce. He claimed that workers didn't act quickly enough on Trump's policies. In the Trump administration, implications for such actions seemed to be widespread layoffs.
