Pope Francis' Final Resting Place Opens to the Public
Rome, Vatican CitySunday, April 27, 2025
The tomb opening marked the start of nine days of official mourning for Pope Francis. After this period, a conclave will be held to choose the next pope. On Sunday, a special Mass was held in St. Peter's Square. Cardinal Pietro Parolin led the service, and he might be a candidate for the next pope.
Many young people attended the Mass. They had come to Rome for the planned canonization of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint. The conclave to elect the new pope is expected to start between May 5 and May 10. Cardinals who attended Pope Francis' funeral will meet regularly to plan the future of the Catholic Church, which has over 1. 4 billion members.
Pope Francis chose his burial spot in St. Mary Major Basilica. He wanted to be near an icon of the Madonna that he loved. The archbishop of the basilica said this choice reflects the pope's humble and simple life. One visitor, Susmidah Murphy from Kerala, India, expressed sadness that such inspiring popes are rare.
