Portage's New Chamber Chief: A Fresh Approach to Business Growth

The Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director, Jerry Czarnecki. He is eager to boost membership by enhancing services for local businesses. He sees the chamber as a partner to businesses, advocating for their needs and promoting their success. This includes sharing members' updates on social media, not just tooting the chamber's own horn. The chamber currently has around 280 members, with annual fees starting at $350. Czarnecki's team is brainstorming ways to better serve the community and connect residents with available services. One idea is collaborating with the city's utilities department to provide a QR code that links to a member directory. This could help new customers familiarize themselves with the community's offerings. Last year, the chamber launched a magazine for Portage, which was a project spearheaded by the former executive director, Nancy Simpson. Simpson is now focused on the magazine, while Czarnecki takes on the broader chamber responsibilities. Adding more staff will allow the chamber to take on more initiatives. Czarnecki believes there's plenty of room for growth in the community.

At monthly board meetings, members are encouraged to suggest potential business leaders for membership. This warm introduction is more effective than a cold call. The chamber's public policy committee has been successful in influencing the City Council to adopt changes in licensing and other requirements. This work, which began under Simpson's leadership, will continue under Czarnecki. The chamber is also partnering with Portage Township Schools to expand the No Place for Hate initiative. The goal is to show students that local businesses support their efforts against bigotry and bullying. Czarnecki's background in teaching and managing a homeless shelter has shaped his approach to his current role. He's all about serving people and helping them build connections for a better future. He believes in celebrating small victories, seeing them as stepping stones to bigger successes. He sees a lot of potential in Portage for economic development. Every September, the chamber hosts an event to showcase the community. A progressive dinner involves transporting participants to multiple restaurants for a taste of their offerings. This event is a great way to highlight what the community has to offer.
