Imagine growing up with loving relationships, a safe environment, and plenty of engaging activities. Researchers have been exploring how these positive childhood experiences (PCEs) can shape our health later in life. They've sifted through thousands of studies to find out which health outcomes are most linked to PCEs.
The study found that substance misuse, suicidal behaviors, and depression were the most commonly researched outcomes. This means scientists are really interested in how positive childhood experiences might protect against these issues. On the other hand, physical health outcomes like heart disease or diabetes were less frequently studied.
The types of PCEs that scientists looked at included relationships, environment, and social engagement. Relationships, like having supportive family and friends, had the most associations with health outcomes. Environment, such as living in a safe neighborhood, came next. Social engagement, like being involved in clubs or sports, also played a role.
The review showed that there's a strong connection between PCEs and health. While there's still more to learn, the findings suggest that promoting positive childhood experiences could improve health in many ways.
