Postal Service Hits Pause on China Packages
Wednesday, February 5, 2025
This has been a significant concern for a while. The US takes in around four million smaller parcels daily, with most of them originating from China. These packages are often delivered without thorough customs checks and without any duties. There's a reason for the concern—many argue that this system creates an easy path for dangerous substances like fentanyl, a strong synthetic opioid, to enter the country.
And guess who's been talking about this issue for a while? The Trump administration. They've been saying that China's smaller shipments are a big problem because they can be used to smuggle in unauthorized and potentially harmful stuff. Fentanyl, for one, is a prescription medication in the US but is sold illegally in some countries. It is extremely potent and can be deadly in large amounts. The Postal Service change is an effort to better regulate these smaller parcels.
