Power Shifts at Consumer Watchdog Agency
Sunday, February 9, 2025
Musk recently posted a cryptic message on X, saying, \ "CFPB RIP" with a tombstone emoji. Soon after, the CFPB's X account vanished, and the agency's website showed an error message. The Trump administration has been targeting the CFPB for a while, aiming to limit its regulatory powers. The bureau was created in 2011 after the Great Recession by the Dodd-Frank Act.
The bureau's mission is to protect consumers and hold corporations accountable. Trump and Republicans have been trying to rein in the CFPB's power for a while.
The situation at USAID is also tense. Trump mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio might take over the agency. Rubio had already paused most of USAID's foreign aid efforts. A federal judge recently put a hold on Trump's plan to significantly reduce USAID's workforce.
The bureau was established in 2011 as a result of the Dodd-Frank Act in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The agency has said its purpose is to increase protections for consumers and accountability for corporations.
