Now, in Trump's second term, there's a bigger push to merge agencies, which makes the CFPB a target. The Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, is focusing on reducing the size of the government. This department has already made moves against USAID, the U. S. Agency for International Development.

Musk recently posted a cryptic message on X, saying, \ "CFPB RIP" with a tombstone emoji. Soon after, the CFPB's X account vanished, and the agency's website showed an error message. The Trump administration has been targeting the CFPB for a while, aiming to limit its regulatory powers. The bureau was created in 2011 after the Great Recession by the Dodd-Frank Act. The bureau's mission is to protect consumers and hold corporations accountable. Trump and Republicans have been trying to rein in the CFPB's power for a while. The situation at USAID is also tense. Trump mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio might take over the agency. Rubio had already paused most of USAID's foreign aid efforts. A federal judge recently put a hold on Trump's plan to significantly reduce USAID's workforce. The bureau was established in 2011 as a result of the Dodd-Frank Act in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The agency has said its purpose is to increase protections for consumers and accountability for corporations.
