Precision Justice: Israel's Humane and Legal Response to Hezbollah's Terror
Lebanon, BeirutMonday, September 23, 2024
In response, Israel has exercised its right to self-defense, a right enshrined in Article 51 of the UN Charter. The Israeli military operation was a textbook example of precision and proportionality, with the majority of casualties being Hezbollah operatives. The use of booby traps in communication devices was also justified, as the devices were being used for military purposes and not civilian ones.
Some critics, including New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have condemned Israel's actions, citing alleged violations of international humanitarian law. However, a closer examination of the law reveals that Israel's operation was entirely lawful. The Principle of Distinction requires parties to an armed conflict to distinguish between civilians and combatants, and Israel only targeted Hezbollah operatives. The Doctrine of Proportionality was also respected, as the military advantage gained from the attack far outweighed any anticipated loss of civilian life.
