In the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, undocumented immigrants are being urged to prepare for possible deportation. Joaquin Garcia, director of community organizing for La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), recently advised a group of immigrants to have a plan in place. This plan should include who will pick up their children from school, manage house and car payments, and handle other important responsibilities if they are detained.
Texas is home to around 1. 6 million undocumented persons, second only to California. The risk of deportation has intensified with Donald Trump's re-election, as he campaigned on promises of mass deportation. Garcia emphasized that now is the time to prepare, even though Trump won't take office until January 20.
At a recent training session, Garcia and LUPE staff member Marcela Alejandre acted out scenarios such as traffic stops and detentions to demonstrate immigrants' rights. They encouraged the audience to think about how they could handle or avoid these situations. The crowd had many questions, ranging from what information to disclose if detained to the legal implications for citizens living with undocumented residents.
LUPE staff admitted they didn't have all the answers but urged attendees to consult with lawyers. One undocumented woman expressed skepticism about whether knowing her rights would protect her from deportation. She felt that officials often disregarded legal status and property ownership.
The situation remains uncertain, with conflicting information circulating about what to expect. For now, many immigrants are in a waiting game, hoping for clarity and safety.
