President Joe Biden decided to commute the death sentences of 37 murderers to life imprisonment. While some news outlets focused on the potential spread of coronavirus during the Trump administration’s executions, they often missed out on the gruesome details of the crimes committed by these individuals. For instance, the crimes of Thomas Sanders, who kidnapped and murdered a 12-year-old girl, and Jorge Avila-Torres, who sexually assaulted and killed children, were barely mentioned.
Instead, many outlets highlighted the crimes of Dylann Roof, Robert Bowers, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, for whom clemency was not granted. This raises questions about how news outlets choose to report on such sensitive topics. Why spend more time on crimes that didn't receive clemency rather than focusing on those that did?
This selective reporting might be driven by political bias. These outlets could be trying to justify Biden’s actions by only presenting facts that support the Democrat in the White House. It’s important to consider that Biden’s decision and the way it was reported might be influenced by the belief that some murders are worse than others based on the motive behind them.
For example, murders motivated by racism or political beliefs are often seen as more heinous than those driven by financial gain or personal depravity. However, this distinction is questionable. Why should one kind of murder be considered worse than another?
Biden’s criteria for clemency were also inconsistent. He claimed to be against the federal death penalty but made exceptions for well-known cases tied to racism or terrorism. This inconsistency raises concerns about the fairness and logic behind these decisions.
The concept of “hate crimes” can be problematic. It can minimize the gravity of some violent crimes simply because they were committed for personal gain or by someone without a political motive. In today’s America, some criminals are going unpunished due to left-wing prosecutors blaming societal issues instead of individual evil. President Biden, who ran as a centrist and governed as a left-wing figure, is now granting clemency to murderers based on motives that don’t attract intense political backlash.
