President Biden Pardons Historic Black Leader and Others
WASHINGTON, USAMonday, January 20, 2025
One of the pardoned individuals, Don Scott, currently serves as the speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. Scott was convicted of a drug offense in 1994 and spent eight years in prison before turning his life around and entering politics. His success story is seen as inspirational by many, including Virginia Governor Glenn Younkin.
Another notable pardon went to Ravi Ragbir, an immigrant rights activist who faced deportation to Trinidad and Tobago after a nonviolent conviction. Kemba Smith Pradia, who was once sentenced to 24 years for a drug offense but later became a prison reform activist, also received a pardon. Darryl Chambers, a gun violence prevention advocate, was another recipient.
Biden commuted the sentences of Michelle West, who was serving life for a drug conspiracy, and Robin Peoples, who was convicted of bank robbery and sentenced to 111 years. Both would face significantly lower sentences under current laws.
