President Biden Signs Bill to Boost Social Security for Public Workers
Washington, USAMonday, January 6, 2025
Biden believes that people who worked hard all their lives should retire with financial security. He was joined by labor leaders and lawmakers from both parties during the signing ceremony. The change will increase monthly payments by an average of $360 for those affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision and by $700 to $1, 190 for those affected by the Government Pension Offset. This change starts in January 2024 and will be backdated.
However, this increase might put more pressure on the Social Security Trust Funds, which are already facing a potential crisis. The Social Security Administration, which is understaffed, will have to handle more work due to this new law. Some Republicans, like Senator Thom Tillis, worry that this change might not be sustainable in the long run. Despite these concerns, many public service workers are excited about the change, as it corrects a long-standing issue they've faced.
