Press Silence Over Trump’s Health Concerns

The Press’s Silence on a Former President’s Health

The 80‑year‑old former president is starting to show signs that could be linked to cognitive decline, yet the press rarely asks about it.
The White House reporters—who normally get close to the President—stay silent on his visible health problems. Even though he can’t speak without a microphone, no one in the press corps probes about his shaky hands or other symptoms.

Every journalist who writes for Washington papers has a phone link to the President, but no one uses that opportunity to ask about his condition. While critics openly question former Vice President Joe Biden’s age, the same level of scrutiny is not extended to Trump.

The media often focuses on Trump’s use of the autopen and his tendency to sign documents with a Sharpie, but they rarely address whether he is actually able to read or write. If the President can’t sign his own name, shouldn’t the public know if he understands what he is signing?

Access to the President is granted through a pass that can be revoked. Some reporters fear losing that privilege if they ask questions that are deemed “off script.” This creates a barrier to asking legitimate concerns about the President’s fitness for office.

The public deserves transparent information about a leader who holds or has held the highest office. If the press continues to avoid these topics, it raises questions about accountability and whether the public is being fully informed.
