Prices Rise Faster Than Expected, Jobless Claims Surge After Storm
USAThursday, October 10, 2024
Meanwhile, jobless claims, which are requests for unemployment benefits, suddenly increased after Hurricane Helene hit. This was not what economists expected. Prices for food jumped by 0.4%, and shelter costs also went up by 0.2%. The only thing that went down in price was energy, with a 1.9% drop. Used car prices increased by 0.3%, and new car prices rose by 0.2%. Medical care services and clothes also got more expensive, going up by 0.7% and 1.1% respectively.
The Federal Reserve, which controls interest rates, has started to lower them. After a half percentage point decrease in September, they might continue to do so, but it's not clear by how much or how fast.
