Protecting Cryptocurrencies from Cloned Vulnerabilities

Cryptocurrencies, despite their innovative use of blockchain technology, have become a hot target for cybercriminals. The main issue? Cloned code. With thousands of new cryptocurrencies popping up, it's no surprise that many borrow code from each other. But this practice can backfire. A single vulnerability in one cryptocurrency can quickly spread to others. To tackle this problem, researchers have developed a tool called CoinWatch.

Instead of waiting for issues to surface, CoinWatch actively tracks and detects potential weaknesses using code evolution analysis and clone detection. This method was tested on 1094 cryptocurrencies, uncovering 786 real vulnerabilities across 384 projects. The results were verified with developers and reported as security updates.
