This isn't the only incident. Federal immigration authorities also visited another international student at Columbia. They tried to take her into custody but were stopped. The student union representing the woman said the agents didn't have a warrant.
Columbia University has guidelines for federal authorities on campus. They state that ICE agents need a judicial warrant or subpoena to access non-public areas. This includes housing.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio shared a message. He said the administration will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America. So they can be deported.
Khalil is the first known person to be detained for deportation. This is under Trump’s crackdown on students protesting the war in Gaza. Khalil is currently being held in an immigration detention center in Louisiana. He was initially sent to a facility in New Jersey. It’s unclear when he will have a hearing in immigration court.
