Protests Turn Deadly in Lebanon as Israeli Forces Delay Withdrawal

On Sunday, tension in southern Lebanon boiled over into violence. At least three people lost their lives and over 40 others were hurt when Israeli forces opened fire on protesters. These demonstrators, some waving Hezbollah flags, were trying to enter border villages. Their goal? To protest Israel's failure to withdraw troops by a 60-day deadline set by a ceasefire agreement. Israel claims they need more time. They say the Lebanese army hasn't deployed to all areas to keep Hezbollah from re-establishing a military presence. But Lebanon's army can't move in until Israeli troops leave, creating a frustrating standoff.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged protesters to stay calm and trust the army. The army, in turn, was seen escorting civilians into some border towns, asking residents to follow their instructions for safety. Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for international action to force Israel out of Lebanese territories. The violence spread across several villages, with deaths reported in Houla, Aitaroun, and Blida. Injuries were also reported in nearby areas. No immediate comment came from the Israeli military about the protests. An Israeli army spokesman had warned residents not to try returning to their villages earlier that day.
