Protests Turn Deadly in Lebanon as Israeli Forces Delay Withdrawal
Monday, January 27, 2025
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged protesters to stay calm and trust the army. The army, in turn, was seen escorting civilians into some border towns, asking residents to follow their instructions for safety.
Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri called for international action to force Israel out of Lebanese territories. The violence spread across several villages, with deaths reported in Houla, Aitaroun, and Blida. Injuries were also reported in nearby areas.
No immediate comment came from the Israeli military about the protests. An Israeli army spokesman had warned residents not to try returning to their villages earlier that day.
