Quantum Computers: Are We There Yet?

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, had some not-so-cheerful news for quantum computing enthusiasts. He thinks it'll be quite a while before we see truly useful quantum computers. This announcement didn't go down well with investors. Stocks for quantum computing companies like IonQ and Rigetti Computing took a nosedive, dropping by over 40%. Huang's comments came during Nvidia's financial analyst day at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). He guessed that it might take 15 to 30 years to have quantum computers that are really useful. He did say that Nvidia plans to play a big role in speeding up this process.

Investors are getting impatient, though. They want to see returns on their investments in AI by 2025. This pressure is making the wait for useful quantum computers even more challenging. Google, on the other hand, had some good news in December. Its latest quantum chip, Willow, showed promising results. It managed to reduce errors when adding more qubits, a problem that's been around for nearly 30 years. Quantum computing is still a work in progress, and while it's exciting, it's also going to take time.
