Red Sox's Infield Puzzle: Where Will Alex Bregman Play?
Sunday, February 16, 2025
The Red Sox are weighing the defensive and offensive strengths of their players. Devers has been vocal about his preference to remain at third base, but Bregman and Campbell could provide a more robust defensive pairing. Campbell's offensive potential could also impact the playing time of Masataka Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela, who may see reduced roles or even lose their roster spots.
The team is also considering how to best utilize Rafaela, who has shown strong defensive skills but has reverse splits against left-handed pitchers. The Red Sox may prefer to develop Rafaela in Triple-A rather than giving him sporadic playing time in the majors. Carrying all three of Campbell, Rafaela, and Yoshida on the roster would leave just one spot for Romy Gonzalez, David Hamilton, and Vaughn Grissom.
The Red Sox's plans hinge on Campbell's performance this spring. If he struggles, Bregman could start at second base until Campbell is ready. If Campbell impresses, the team will have to figure out how to best utilize their infield talent.
