Reeves Cake Shop: A Sweet Farewell After Half a Century
The iconic family bakery, Reeves Cake Shop, will close its doors this December after 50 years of sweet tradition that began in 1976. The decision comes as the children of founder Dolores Reeves reach retirement age, bringing an end to a legacy that has baked more than 10,000 wedding cakes for the community.
A Legacy Baked from Childhood
Dolores, now 93, started her culinary journey at age twelve in a modest family kitchen that eventually became a neighborhood bakery. Together with her late husband, Robert Reeves, she opened the original shop on East Avenue before relocating to 2770 Cory Ave in 1989. The recipes she uses today were inherited from her parents, who ran a bakery in Kenmore for decades before it was renamed.
The Art of Homemade Baking
- All‑scratch approach: Every cake is made from sugar, flour, eggs—no shortcuts.
- Adaptable for dietary needs: Vegan, gluten‑free, and allergy-friendly options are available.
- Flavor spectrum: From classic chocolate to gourmet creations such as Hummingbird and Death By Chocolate.
Rick Reeves, the current manager and baker, emphasizes that every item is crafted with care. Employees include Dolores herself, who dedicates at least five hours daily to decorating, and Terry Walquist, the office manager. The team expands during holidays, with many volunteers drawn to the bakery’s warm atmosphere.
Closing Date and Final Orders
- Closing day: Christmas Eve (December 24)
- Last order date: December 17
- Operating hours until closing:
- Tuesday‑Friday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- Closed on Sundays and Mondays
Despite pleas from loyal customers, the family remains firm in their decision. Dolores has mentioned that she may bake a chocolate cake occasionally after closing, but the shop’s doors will stay shut permanently.
