Reform in Criminal Justice: A Look Beyond California's Vote
USA, Los Angeles, Alameda County, Travis Orlando, Detroit, ManhattanWednesday, November 20, 2024
Discretion has its downsides. In the past, some prosecutors have caused harm. But there were no calls to end discretion then. Now, as prosecutors try new approaches, there are efforts to undermine their independence. Some even suggest suing or prosecuting local prosecutors to force them to follow strict rules. This isn't fair. Holding prosecutors accountable is important, but taking away their tools isn't democratic.
To keep communities safe, prosecutors need more resources and support, not less. They should focus on fighting serious crimes and using evidence-based programs. With new attacks emerging, it's crucial to back prosecutors. The Institute for Innovation in Prosecution works with prosecutors who want to try new things and have community support. We must let them use these approaches to meet their communities' needs.
