Reimagining Faith: Black Nonbinary Spirituality

You know, spiritual journeys can be really interesting when you combine nonbinary and Black perspectives. We heard from 11 people, all nonbinary Black women aged between 21 to 30, living in the US. They talked about how they see spirituality and religion differently. Some were more spiritual, while others were more religious. Two participants didn't identify with either. These people did not let their beliefs be controlled by Christian traditions. It seems that some of them grew up being taught Christian ways, but they did not believe in them. Instead, they wanted to create their own unique experiences and identity. For many of these participants, spirituality was about feeling connected to something bigger and broader. One person said, "God. . . is pretty nonbinary if you think about it. " Some people said that they believe in talking to the universe and ancestors were. It’s like having a constant chat with something much bigger. Then there were questions about what beliefs might have looked like if colonialism hadn’t happened.

This study was all about understanding spiritual and religious views in the real world. They did this by using different theories for guidance and doing interviews. The findings were about getting people to think about how we define and connect with our faith. We need to realize that our views about spirituality and religion are not always the same and who defines our concepts of God, the way we define concepts such as gender and spiritual beliefs, are not the same. It is important to think about how we can support and care for people who have different kinds of spiritual experiences and beliefs. It's also crucial to remember that faith and spirituality don't always have to be tied to Christian values. In the end, it's all about giving people the space to explore and express their own ideas. These findings can help us think about how we handle different spiritual and religious experiences. It’s clear that many nonbinary Black women are actively redefining and shaping their unique spiritual paths outside of conventional religious structures.
