Religious Leaders Navigate Election Season: Should They Speak Up or Stay Silent?

In two different states, two pastors took different approaches to talking about politics in their churches. One, Bishop McKissick from Florida, was open about his support for Vice President Kamala Harris. He even consulted with a lawyer from her campaign to make sure he didn't break any rules. The other, Pastor Howerton from Texas, gave a sermon about voting from a Christian perspective, but didn't name any candidates. Interestingly, only Pastor Howerton faced criticism, with a group demanding his church lose its tax-exempt status.

This happened because of the Johnson Amendment, a law from 1954 that stops churches from endorsing candidates. Some churches might be scared to talk about politics because of this law. However, the Supreme Court has said that the government can't tell churches what to preach. So, should religious leaders stay quiet or speak their minds this election season?
