In the United States, invasive species are causing big problems. U. S. Rep. Ed Case and U. S. Rep. James Moylan are doing something about it. They've introduced a new law called the Invasive Species Response Act. This law aims to help the government fight invasive species better. Hawaii is facing a unique challenge with these invasive species. Native birds and plants are struggling. Invasive plants and animals are changing ecosystems fast and pushing out local species. "Protecting Hawaii's special mix of plants and animals isn't just good for the environment, it's important for the culture and history of the Hawaiian people, " said Rep. Case. Experts are touring Oahu right now to learn more about invasive species. They'll write a report for the government. This report will help the government support Hawaii, other island territories, and nations in Micronesia. "Hawaii is known as the 'extinction capital of the world'" said Jonee Kaina Peters, executive director of Conservation Council for Hawai'i. She explained that over 5, 000 invasive species have been introduced to Hawaii, hurting native wildlife and taking over ecosystems.
