House Speaker Mike Johnson is set to reveal a health care package next week, but not all Republicans are aligned with his approach.

Push for ACA Subsidy Extension

A group of Republicans, primarily from swing districts, is urging a vote on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies before they expire at the end of the month. These subsidies help over 20 million Americans afford health insurance premiums.

Johnson's Alternative Plan

Johnson has not disclosed details of his plan, but it likely excludes ACA subsidy extensions. Instead, he has suggested options like:

  • Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
  • Changes to pharmacy benefit managers

However, lawmakers left a recent meeting without a clear strategy.

Moderate Republicans Demand Action

Moderate Republicans want Congress to address subsidies before expiration. They have signed bipartisan discharge petitions to force a vote. These petitions require 218 signatures, but Democrat support remains uncertain.

  • Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) filed separate but similar petitions.
  • As of Thursday, 11 Republicans have signed both petitions.

Johnson opposes these efforts, stating his package will reduce premiums for all Americans, not just a select few.

Warning of Political Consequences

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), a supporter of both petitions, warned of midterm election risks if subsidies are not extended. He argues that inaction will raise premiums for all constituents, a politically damaging outcome.
