On Friday, top Republican leaders in Congress—Mike Johnson, the House Speaker, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell—spoke out against Vice President Kamala Harris. They criticized her for labeling former President Trump as a fascist during a CNN town hall. The leaders warned that such language could potentially create a dangerous situation. They pointed out that Trump has faced serious threats recently, including two assassination attempts. Harris's remarks, they claimed, could provoke more violence. "When you call someone like Trump a fascist, it raises the threat level, " Johnson and McConnell stated. "This can invite attacks, especially against someone who has already been targeted. " They urged Harris to avoid such "irresponsible" language. The Republican leaders were briefed on the ongoing threats to Trump. They mentioned the shooting that injured him at a rally in July and an alleged botched assassination attempt at his Florida golf club. They called for Harris to help ensure Trump's safety. While the Republicans focused on Harris's language, they did not address Trump's own harsh comments. Recently, Trump has called Harris a "Marxist" and a "fascist" at his rallies. He also talked about setting the military against domestic protesters, an action that would be illegal. Harris's comments were in response to former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly's remarks. Kelly said that Trump "fits the definition of a fascist. " When asked if she agreed, Harris replied, "Yes, I do. " Later, she repeated her stance, saying Trump admires dictators and is a fascist. It's interesting to note that McConnell has been in the spotlight recently for his own critical views on Trump. After the January 6th Capitol attack, he privately labeled Trump as "stupid" and a "despicable human being. "
