Revamping Drug Treatment: A New Approach in the Philippines

In the Philippines, the need for better drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation services has been growing. To address this, the Department of Health (DOH) has introduced a new residential treatment model called INTREPRET. This model has been integrated into 21 existing DOH-owned Treatment and Rehabilitation Centers (TRCs). We conducted a qualitative study to see how this new approach has changed the way treatment is provided. The study found that INTREPRET focuses on intensive treatment and rehabilitation, offering a more comprehensive program for people who use drugs (PWUDs). The model includes various therapeutic activities and counseling sessions to help patients overcome their addiction. One of the key changes noticed was the increased engagement of PWUDs in their own treatment plans. This hands-on approach allows them to actively participate in their recovery journey.

Moreover, INTREPRET emphasizes a holistic approach, addressing not just the addiction but also the underlying issues that contribute to it. This includes mental health support and social reintegration programs. The study also highlighted the importance of training for healthcare providers. The new model requires staff to be well-versed in the latest treatment methods and techniques. However, the implementation of INTREPRET hasn't been without its challenges. Resources and infrastructure are always a concern, and ensuring consistent quality across all centers can be difficult. Nevertheless, the initial results are promising, showing that with the right support and resources, INTREPRET can make a significant difference in the lives of PWUDs.
