Philadelphia’s Revitalized Transit Hub: A New Era for Bus Travel

From Greyhound to Modern Mobility

After a three-year hiatus, Philly’s iconic bus terminal at 10th and Filbert Streets is back—and better than ever. The newly rebranded Philadelphia Parking Authority Transportation Center will welcome its first FlixBus from Richmond at 12:20 a.m. Friday, marking the start of a new chapter for intercity travel in the city.

A $5 Million Transformation

The $5 million overhaul, led by the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) in partnership with the city’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems, has turned a once-dated facility into a modern transit hub. The revamp includes:

  • 189 passenger chairs (replacing curbside stops on Spring Garden Street)
  • 11 bus bays (up from nine)
  • A spacious waiting room with bright windows and improved lighting
  • Amenities like vending machines, restrooms, ticket counters, and driver rest areas
  • Future café space already in the works

Light, Space, and Functionality

Gone is the "bunker-like" feel of the old terminal. The new design prioritizes natural light, airflow, and comfort, making layovers far more bearable. City officials, including Mayor Parker, fast-tracked the project to ensure readiness for major events like the World Cup, sporting competitions, and the U.S. Semiquincentennial celebrations.

A Model for Future Transit Projects

The PPA’s involvement began in October 2023, with a formal lease agreement signed in December. The authority holds a 10-year lease on the property, with an option to extend. Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr. hailed the project’s speed and efficiency, calling it a "new standard for future collaborations."

What’s Next?

While the Filbert Street station will serve travelers for at least a decade, city planners are already scouting over 200 potential sites for a permanent intercity bus hub.

For now, passengers can step into a brighter, more efficient era of travel—one where waiting for a bus doesn’t feel like enduring a dimly lit purgatory.
