Rider Charlotte Dujardin Banned for Year After Horse Whipping Incident

Charlotte Dujardin, a top British equestrian known for her Olympic medals, was suspended for one year and fined about $12, 000. This penalty came after officials reviewed a video showing Dujardin hitting her horse excessively. The International Federation for Equestrian Sports announced the verdict on Thursday, December 5. Dujardin accepted the verdict and apologized, stating her actions didn't represent her. She had previously received a six-month ban in July and decided to withdraw from the 2024 Summer Games. The investigation started when a video of Dujardin and the horse surfaced. She cooperated fully during the probe.

The ban also includes all events or competitions within the international and national federations. Sabrina Ibanez, the secretary-general of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports, emphasized that the action taken demonstrates their commitment to horse welfare, especially during significant events like the Olympics. Dujardin's victories include gold medals in team and individual dressage at the London and Rio Olympics, and bronze in both categories at the Tokyo Olympics. Additionally, Dujardin announced she is expecting a baby due in February. She expressed remorse and thanked her supporters.
