River Rising: Pacific Faces Sudden Flood Evacuations
Early Morning Crisis
In the early hours of Tuesday, a critical levee on the White River gave way, prompting immediate action in Pacific. The city's emergency services swiftly issued a Level 3 "Go Now" evacuation order, targeting areas near 3rd Avenue Southeast and Butte Road. Many residents were roused from their sleep by first responders, who urgently knocked on doors to ensure everyone's safety.
National Weather Service's Crucial Role
The National Weather Service played a pivotal role, issuing a flash flood warning at around 1:35 a.m. after confirming the levee breach. The failed levee was a HESCO barrier, a type of soil-filled structure meant to hold back floodwaters. City crews are now working diligently to reinforce the levee with additional barriers.
Significant Impact and Evacuation Efforts
The impact of this event is substantial, with approximately 2,159 people affected, according to the National Weather Service. Authorities strongly advised everyone in the flash flood warning area to evacuate promptly. Several apartment complexes in the vicinity are also under threat.
Resident's Harrowing Experience
One resident shared their harrowing experience, describing how they opened their window to find the parking lot underwater, with water reaching the tires of a pickup truck. This resident called 911, and a boat was dispatched to assist in the evacuation. Even so, residents had to wade through ankle-deep water to reach the evacuation center.
City's Response and Support
The City of Pacific has responded by opening the Senior Center at 100 3rd Ave SE to house evacuees. Other city buildings, including City Hall, are serving as warming centers for those in need.
