In Post Falls, a major roadwork project has been causing quite a stir. The 300 block of Spokane Street is under construction, and local businesses are feeling the heat. Shem Hanks, co-owner of the Filling Station gastropub, has noticed a significant drop in customers. Normally, autumn is a busy time for his business, but this year it's different. "September is usually one of our busiest months," says Hanks. "But with all the construction going on, people aren't walking through our doors." The roadwork project has expanded beyond its initial plans. The Idaho Transportation Department joined in, adding more work to the mix. Now, the project includes replacing asphalt, repairing sewer manholes, and even replacing a rail crossing utility casing. John Beacham, Public Works director, says they're trying to finish as quickly as possible. Next door at Kitty G’s charcuterie shop, co-owner Ashley Wyatt has seen a drop in business too. "We're only getting about 60% of the customers we usually have," she explains. Tattoo artist Tank Sabbath from Altered Society Tattoo Company hasn't seen many walk-ins lately either. "It's tough for clients to find us with all the roadwork," he says. The city has been trying to help. They've put up signs to guide people to the businesses, but it's still a struggle. Hanks is hoping they can make it through October with all their employees. "We're just trying to weather the storm," he says.
