Robinson's Faltering Campaign: A Study in Self-Distancing
North Carolina, USAWednesday, September 25, 2024
Other prominent Republicans, including US Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd, have spoken out against Robinson, with Tillis suggesting that Robinson's campaign has reached a point of no return. "I think the clock is ticking," Tillis said. "If Mr. Robinson doesn't set forth a case that provides some credibility to a counterargument, then I think that most of us should move on, not be concerned with this race."
Even national Republicans and conservative groups have distanced themselves from Robinson. The National Rifle Association, which had been running ads in support of Robinson, has stopped its ad campaign, and the Republican Governors Association has canceled its fundraiser in Greensboro, North Carolina.
So why are these politicians so eager to distance themselves from Robinson? According to political analysts, it's because his inflammatory comments have become a liability for many in the Republican Party. "Robinson's comments are a major turnoff for many voters," said one analyst. "By distancing themselves from him, these politicians are trying to avoid being associated with his controversial views."
