Rochelle Schools: Taxes, Grants, and Growing Preschools
Tax Increase for 2025
The Rochelle Elementary School District has announced a 4.99% tax increase for 2025. This increase, just under the 5% threshold, avoids the need for a special hearing. The additional funds will primarily support transportation and special education, two of the district's largest expenses.
State Ratings and Improvement Plans
All four schools in the district received a "commendable" rating from the state, based on factors like test scores and attendance. The district aims to achieve an "exemplary" rating but acknowledges there is still work to be done. These ratings are being used to guide improvement plans.
Stepping Stones Preschool Expansion
Stepping Stones Preschool is rapidly growing. After moving into the old May Elementary School building, they now have seven classrooms. The preschool focuses on preparing children for kindergarten through play-based learning and social skills development. The goal is to enroll 220 students by the end of the year.
Lincoln Elementary's Reading Initiative
Lincoln Elementary is enhancing its reading program. Since implementing small group reading instruction daily and emphasizing phonics, the school has seen improved results. The aim is to ensure more students are proficient readers by the end of first grade.
Grant Application and Staff Changes
The school board approved applying for a grant to renovate a science area at the middle school. The district will need to match $50,000, but the chances of securing the grant are favorable. Additionally, the board approved several staff changes, including a retirement and the hiring of a new bilingual paraprofessional.
