Sutherland preferred controlling the whole rather than just a part, leading him to the finance side of the industry.

At CAA, Sutherland hasn't looked back. Although he initially struggled to find his footing, he eventually found his niche as the independent film sector started to flourish post-2006 economic crisis. He's played a crucial role in financing films like "The Wrestler" and "Black Swan," understanding that success often comes from rolling with the punches.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the Cannes Film Festival, Sutherland and his team stepped up, creating a virtual market. According to Sutherland, collaboration is key. He believes that when the independent community works together, they achieve great success.
