Romania's Election Chaos and the Putin Connection
Thursday, January 30, 2025
This situation makes you think about what's really important. Is democracy always the answer, even when other countries are trying to influence it? Or should there be limits?
It's a big question, and Romania's Western allies can help by making their support clear in defend its elections. They need to show Romania that they really care about democracies and NATO.
You may remember, Romania started transitioning away from a communist ruler back in 1990. That's when things got really exciting, with Romania stepping into the European Union in 2007 and making big strides to get into the Schengen zone.
Now, as a nation, they must decide what to do with this situation. They could disqualify Georgescu. Or, they could let him run and hope he loses big.
Romania's choices in the next steps will affect others in the region. They could either show that democracy can handle a tough situation or show that the west isn't willing to stand up to Russia. The international community must back Romania in this fight for its democracy. The Conservatives cannot be side by side with it.
