Rory's Rough Start, Justin's Bright Day at Augusta
Augusta National, USAFriday, April 11, 2025
The Masters is all about experience, and Rose has plenty of it. He's led or co-led after every round at Augusta at least once. But he's never won the Green Jacket. His closest call was in 2017 when he lost in a playoff to Sergio García. Rose knows the course well, and he's using that knowledge to his advantage.
Scottie Scheffler, the defending champion, had a typical Augusta day. He shot a 68, looking effortless as ever. He's hiding in plain sight, but he's always a threat. Corey Conners and Bryson DeChambeau are also in the mix. DeChambeau thinks he's finally figured out the Masters. Tyrrell Hatton, who once called Augusta "unfair, " had a good day. He shot a 69, showing he's learned to handle the course's challenges.
There were some ups and downs on the first day. Nick Dunlap had a rough time, shooting a 90. Fred Couples had a good day, shooting a 71. Patrick Reed wasn't happy with his 71, calling it "piss poor. " Ángel Cabrera, back from prison, shot a 75. There was even a bit of drama with a Spanish amateur, José Luis Ballester, causing a "watergate" scandal. But through it all, the leaderboard is stacked with stars. It's going to be an exciting tournament.
