In a shocking turn, US officials revealed that around 8, 000 North Korean troops are in Russia's Kursk region, possibly gearing up to join the fight against Ukraine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said these troops are trained in skills like artillery and drone use, suggesting they're ready for combat. Though not seen in action yet, Blinken warned that if engaged, they'd become legitimate military targets. This announcement comes amid growing concerns about Russia and North Korea’s military partnership.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin assured that Ukraine could hold its territory in Kursk despite the potential reinforcements. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised the close ties between Russia and North Korea. US officials stressed the need for China to use its influence to curb North Korea’s actions, noting the deepening cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow as a regional threat.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed surprise at China’s silence regarding North Korea’s support for Russia. The US plans to announce more military aid to Ukraine in the coming days.
