Rwanda Battles Marburg: 11 Dead, No Known Source

Marburg hemorrhagic fever has taken the lives of 11 people in Rwanda, according to health officials. This deadly virus shares similar symptoms with Ebola and has infected a total of 36 individuals. The first cases were found among patients in healthcare facilities. Although the outbreak was declared on September 27, its origin remains unknown. This lack of information raises concern about further spread in Rwanda, especially since Kigali, the capital, is an international transport hub. In Germany, two people were isolated after returning from Rwanda. They had been near Marburg virus patients but tested negative for the disease. Back in Rwanda, healthcare workers are among the most affected, with some living in border districts. Authorities have identified 300 contacts who may have been exposed to the virus and placed them in isolation facilities.

To control the spread, strict measures have been put in place. These include suspending school visits, limiting hospital visits, and restricting funeral attendance. The U.S. Embassy has advised its staff to work from home. Marburg is believed to come from fruit bats and can be deadly without treatment. Symptoms are similar to Ebola and include fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and in severe cases, extreme blood loss leading to death. There’s no vaccine or authorized treatment for this disease yet.
