Greater sage-grouse, native to Colorado and Wyoming, face harsh winters. For these birds, finding the right place to hang out becomes crucial. Researchers found that sage-grouse don't just hibernate or reduce their activity in winter. Instead, they actively seek out cozy spots with plenty of sagebrush cover to protect themselves from wind and cold. They prefer areas where wind speeds are lower and wind chill isn't as harsh. Interestingly, when it comes to their home ranges, they pick spots with more snow and greater blizzarding conditions. But within these home ranges, they move to places with less wind and snow for daily shelter. This study shows how important it is for these birds to find just the right places to stay warm and safe. Understanding this helps people manage these habitats better and keep the sage-grouse population strong.
