San Francisco's First Tornado Warning: A Bay Area Storm Story

Imagine this: San Francisco, known for its fog and mild weather, wakes up to something unexpected—a tornado warning! Saturday morning, the National Weather Service flashed a warning for the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Daly City, and Broadmoor. This wasn't just any weather alert; it was the city's first-ever tornado warning. What caused all this? An atmospheric river, a band of strong wind and moisture, was moving across the region. KGO-TV meteorologist Lisa Argen noted that this was the first time since the 1980s that a South San Francisco area had seen such a warning.

The alert went out at 5:52 a. m. and was canceled quickly, around 20 minutes later. Despite the short duration, the storm resulted in power outages across the Bay Area. One Daly City resident described the conditions as "nasty outside. " The storm started as a Level 3, then eased down to a Level 2 before becoming a dry Level 1 storm by mid-morning. Even though the severe alert was over, strong windy conditions were expected to stick around.
