Sarah McBride Makes History: First Trans Congressperson

In a significant milestone for representation, Sarah McBride, a state senator from Delaware, is set to become the first openly transgender person to serve in the U. S. Congress. This accomplishments follows her win in Delaware's at-large House seat, which was left vacant by Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester's Senate run. Though Delaware is a blue state, McBride distinguished herself through her advocacy for bipartisan policies, like paid family leave, and her union support. She didn't emphasize the historical nature of her candidacy but highlighted the need for respect in Congress.

McBride is a close ally of President Joe Biden, influencing his stance on LGBTQ+ issues since 2006. Their connection deepened when she worked on Beau Biden's attorney general campaign. McBride's memoir, "Tomorrow Will Be Different, " even features a foreword by the president. This memoir tells her story as a transgender rights activist, including her marriage to fellow activist Andrew Cray, who sadly passed away just days after their wedding. Throughout her career, McBride has broken barriers. In 2012, she made national headlines as a student body president at American University by coming out as transgender in an op-ed.
