Saving Moms: Why Measuring The Right Things Matters

In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) set global targets to reduce maternal deaths by 2030. This plan, part of the Sustainable Development Goals, involves looking beyond just medical care. Instead, it focuses on big social, economic, and political issues that affect maternal health and survival. Experts from various fields helped create these targets, aiming to save mothers' lives. Currently, most measurements of maternal health focus on services like hospitals and clinics. But the WHO wants to change that. They believe it's crucial to also measure things like laws, policies, and how well communities support mothers. To do this, they identified 25 key indicators and 7 standard factors that show how well a country is doing in these areas.

However, not all these indicators have been properly tested. Measurement experts agree that more research is needed to ensure these indicators are accurate. This paper explores nine research studies in India, Ghana, and Argentina. These studies validated ten of these indicators. The goal was to show how important accurate measurements are for saving mothers' lives and improving policies. The studies found some interesting patterns. For instance, they showed that empowering women and girls can lead to better maternal health outcomes. They also underscored the importance of ensuring fair access to healthcare for all. These findings can help in shaping better policies and practices around the world. It's like trying to fix a leaky roof without knowing where the leak is coming from.
